Lost Films of Covid Series

Return to the Big Screen
/ Initiatives/ Lost Films of Covid Series

In December of 2025, we partnered with A24, NEON, IFC, GKIDS, and Film Movement to present the "Lost films of Covid" series to re-release seven films that had their theatrical runs cut short five years ago due to covid.

This series was a celebration of the resilience of independent cinemas, giving these powerful and provocative films the theatrical spotlight they deserved: Red Rocket (A24) dir. by Sean Baker, First Cow (A24) dir. by Kelly Reichardt, Pig (NEON) dir. by Michael Sarnoski, Painter and the Thief (NEON) dir. by Benjamin Ree, Wolfwalkers (GKIDS) dir. by Tomm Moore, Ross Stewart, Relic (IFC) dir. by Natalie Erika James, and The Wild Goose Lake (Film Movement) dir. by Diao Yinan.

“We made ‘Red Rocket’ specifically for the big screen and it makes me so happy to know that audiences who didn’t have the chance to see it that way, finally will,” Baker said.

With filmmaker support, including Sean Baker kindly lending his personal 35mm print of Red Rocket for screening, our team spearheaded media efforts which attracted attention from industry publications Variety and TheWrap, as well as the Film Threat podcast. We produced a variety of promotional poster designs and Lost Films of Covid apparel for sharing with audiences.

We’ve been deeply proud to work on this collective effort with distributors, theaters and filmmakers so audiences can enjoy these films as they were originally intended to be seen on the big screen.

At its heart, this series is a testament to the timeless nature of visionary filmmaking and the resilience of the independent cinema teams who elevate these stories. Participating independent theaters included Nitehawk Cinemas, The Frida Cinema, Harris Theater, and Gateway Film Center.

Thanks to all the momentum and engagement generated through this initial project, it’s likely a second incarnation of the series may be on the horizon soon, with more compelling films impacted by covid that still deserve their time on the big screen for audiences to experience together.

When the pandemic forced theaters to shut down their projectors and close their doors, we heard the same sweeping proclamations that always blare so loudly during these times of change and crisis... the inevitable death of cinema had finally arrived.
